Field Notes: an offline-first notebook for researchers working far from a signal

Sync that survives weeks without a connection, built with a small team at a university field lab.

Field Notes started as a favor. A friend running a soil-sampling project at a university field station was losing data every season.

The problem

The station had no reliable connection, and most note apps assumed you would sync every few minutes.

What we built

A small notebook app that treats offline as the normal case, using the approach described in this primer on CRDTs.

Design principles

  • Never show a sync spinner when someone is trying to write
  • Make conflicts visible, but never block on them
  • Keep the data format plain enough to open in a text editor

What I learned

The hardest part was earning back trust from people who had already lost work to software.
